Catching up with Tyla Samuel of Lulu's
Last week we caught up with friend of Goodlids, Tyla Samuel of Lulu's. While Tyla may be best-known to Goodlids customers as the female face of the brand, she has been working away over the last few years, building up her coconut soft-serve ice cream business, Lulu's. Recently, Tyla and Lulu's took an exciting new step, opening up a bricks and mortar location in Ponsonby Central!
Congrats on opening your new Ponsonby location! Tell us a bit about your journey with Lulu's to date!
Thank you! After 4 years in our food truck, it feels good to have a more permanent spot, especially in the winter time! Lulu’s was born after numerous trips throughout Europe, Indo and Australia. The acai and icecream game was strong, so I was inspired to create our own version here in New Zealand!
Which item on your menu would you recommend to a first-time customer?
Our whole menu is plant based so suitable for everyone. I’d recommend grabbing an acai bowl, they’re pretty epic!
You were a Goodlids customer before you started modelling for us, what is your favourite Goodlids hat of all time?
Fave hat has got to be my Wax Mustang 'big dogs have to eat' lid. It was a conversation starter all summer haha.
Outside of your work with Lulu's, what are you passionate about?
Escaping the city in my van! Camping, surfing, I love an outdoor adventure.
How do you think that passion led you towards what you do with Lulu's?
Creating a work life balance and doing something that I love was super important when starting this journey!
What has been your favourite part of your Lulus' journey to date, and where to next?
Opening this shop has been a milestone for sure but prior to this, heading to New Years festivals! Having my mates work in the food truck during the summer is always a good time!! For now, just focusing on this new venture and expanding the menu. Watch this space :)
You can find Lulu's at 8 Brown street in the laneway of Ponsonby Central beside Silky Otter, open 10am - 3pm everyday!
